The History and Evolution of Stiletto Knives

Knives have been around us since so many years. We can’t exactly date back to the time when they were invented by the human race. So many design changes have been made to them over the years and with technological advancement, we have come to the time where a lot of different types of knives are available to everyone for executing different types of tasks. Among them, stiletto knives are very famous. Are you familiar with stiletto knives? If not, then let us have a look at their brief introduction.

What are Stiletto Knives?

Stiletto knives are known as the perfect Italian blades. They are distinguished and known worldwide for their sleek and slender design. The thin and narrow blade of a stiletto knife ends up on a pointed tip which makes them the best choice for stabbing and thrusting rather than slicing, cutting or piercing. This narrow blade of a stiletto knife also gives it a narrow cross-sectional area which reduces friction when the blade is thrust into something. This factor allows the blades of stiletto knives to reach more depth than a normal blade would.

Dagger Like Design

It is also said that a stiletto knife is a much modern and updated version of a dagger. However, daggers are mostly known to have double edges and stiletto knives mostly have single-edged blades. This is their most distinguishing feature from daggers but when it comes to the overall design and structure of a stiletto knife, ranging from its razor-sharp blade that ends up on a pointed tip, it is safe to say that stiletto knives are the successors of the traditional daggers and resemble them very much.

The History of Stiletto Knives

The word “stiletto” is known to be derived from the word “Stilus” which is a Latin word. A stiletto knife as we discussed above is generally known to be a special type of a dagger and its main purpose is to thrust and stab due to its razor-sharp blade and pointed tip. Stiletto knives generally feature big and long blades, however, they are not broad but are sleek, slender and thin.

Therefore, their surface is narrow and that is how the original stiletto knife was as well. The real one can be dated back to the 15th century where a stiletto knife was so thin and needle-like that it could be slid inside the armor of a person in the battlefield to kill as it was very hard to thrust a sword into the full body armor of the knight.
